Ryoan-ji is a Zen temple, and its gardens have brought it fame. The dry landscape rock garden features immaculate, raked white sand and beautifully positioned rocks that are said to symbolize the workings of nature. Whatever the garden's unknown creator had in mind some 500 years ago, the result is incredibly tranquil.

Consider joining a 3 hour walking hour of Kyoto's Japanese Gardens:

From Kyoto Station, take the bus to Ryoan-ji Mae bus stop, which drops off and picks up right in front of the attraction.
