With grounds spreading over 275,000 square meters in central Kyoto, Nijo Castle is impossible to overlook. The World Heritage Site was built by the first Edo Shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu, in the early 1600s and then added to by subsequent generations. The castle is comprised to two concentric rings of fortifications, gardens and several palaces, but the highlight has to be the ‘nightingale floors’ in the corridors of the Ninomaru Palace, which are designed to squeak like birds when walked upon to protect against assassins.

Closed every Tuesday in December, January, July, and August. If a national holiday falls on a Tuesday during that time, then it will be closed the following day.
