Established in the late 1200s but with the current buildings mainly dating from the 17th century, this head temple for the Rinzai school of Zen is considered to be one of the most important Zen temples in the world. And it doesn’t disappoint. Highlights include the giant main gate (Sanmon), the main building’s Leaping Tiger Garden –a classic Zen combination of raked sand and symbolic rock placement– , and 27 acres of forest that conceal more small temples, gardens and even an aqueduct.
