Pilpintuwasi Butterfly Farm and Conservation Ctr

Pilpintuwasi Butterfly Farm and Conservation Ctr

Padre Cocha,
Iquitos, Peru
Opening Hours: Tue to Sun: 9 AM to 4 PM

There are several animal and orphanage facilities around Iquitos; the Pilpintuwasi centre is one of the highest rated by visitors. It is well run with knowledgeable volunteers, and easy to reach from Iquitos.
There are two major areas of the farm. The first is a butterfly farm housed in several large conservatories with hundreds of colorful species from throughout the Amazon region. The center breeds butterflies here, and visitors can see each stage of growth, with caterpillars and chrysalises collected in a separate area -particularly fascinating for younger visitors!
The second area is an animal rescue center, caring for a wide variety of injured or at risk animals from the region. Some have suffered loss of habitat, others have been domesticated then abandoned, and many have been rescued from markets or intercepted when traded. The center works closely with the local police and law enforcement in and around Iquitos. The goal is to release animals back into their natural environment. This is not always possible and some animals have become permanent residents, including a jaguar. Common residents include anteaters, monkeys, crocodiles, and various birds and parrots.
The journey to the center is part of the fun of a visit, especially for those who will not head further into the rain forest to tour or stay at a lodge. It is located upriver near an interesting little village, and surrounded by jungle.

Boat from Iquitos, to the village of Padre Cocha, then a 15 minute walk
