Nanjing Road is one of the foremost commercial and shopping streets in Shanghai, indeed in all of China. Busy day and night, the whole road is over 3 miles long, packed with department stores, boutique shops, neon lights, and of course people!
The road has two main sections, Nanjing East and Nanjing West Road. Nanjing East Road is the more densely packed and pedestrianized along its whole length. This was the original area that developed as a shopping center in the city, first as part of the British Concession in Shanghai, and later as part of the International Settlement. Large amounts of imported foreign goods were sold there, and this trend continues into modern China today.
Nanjing East road is a permanent hive of activity. As well as the massive variety of shopping options, there are food stalls, outdoor bars and often street entertainment.
Nanjing West road is a slightly statelier affair. As well as plenty of high end shops and department stores, visitors will appreciate the impressive architecture from the European period. Look out for the 1934 built Park Hotel, once the tallest building in the city and its most fashionable address.
