Sacramento, United States
Visitors coming into Sacramento by train can step out of the train station and into the nostalgia of old Sacramento and the California Gold Rush. Wooden sidewalks, steamboats, simple wooden structures and the opportunity to play dress up in period costumes, visit old fashioned candy shops, take a horse drawn carriage ride or a whirl in a steam train, will amuse even the most cynical among us. Yes, there are loads of tourist and souvenir shops, but old Sacramento is also a reservoir of California history, best absorbed by joining a docent tour or taking a self-guided historical walk. The visitor’s center on 2nd St offers helpful suggestions and train buffs should not miss the California Railroad Museum. Visiting hours displayed are general hours of opening for shops and restaurants.
