California State Railroad Museum
This is a train-lover’s paradise. Filled with over 20 restored locomotives and railroad cars, reconstructed models and sets, and plenty of hands-on displays, this is one of Sacramento’s most famous attractions and the largest train museum in the nation. Jump on trains dating back to the birth of California or glimpse the future of high-speed rail. History buffs can immerse themselves in the maps that show the development of the California rail network, which was non-existent in the 1850s, boomed during the Industrial Revolution, declined throughout the last few decades, and now experiencing rebirth. Well-informed docents take visitors on free tours of the museum’s immaculately maintained exhibits. For those who are eager to ride the rails, the Museum offers special train rides such as the Polar Express during the Christmas season. During the summer, visitors can take a free ride on a tourist train down the Sacramento River to Miller Park.
