Rising 1,280 meters above the Bay of Naples, the double peak of the world’s most notorious volcano is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Vesuvius looms over a population of nearly two million people, who nonchalantly carry on their lives despite the ever-present threat of another catastrophic eruption echoing the one in 79AD, which saw the destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The last was in 1944; since then there have been rumbles causing slight earth tremors, so it may be that the big one is coming. All activity is assiduously monitored so a visit is perfectly safe. The fertile slopes of Vesuvius produce deliciously sweet cherry tomatoes and the rich red wine, Lacryma di Cristo. Some 200,000 visitors annually make the 30-minute trek up the relatively gentle lava-strewn incline to peer into the volcano’s crater and spot the steaming fumaroles inside. May and June are the best times to go; wild flowers strew the slopes and you have the choice of several way-marked paths to explore. Whenever you make the trip, there are always breathtaking views across the Bay of Naples. Many day trip tour options:
