The Royal Bavarian Flying Corps is permanently grounded, but an early 20th Century airfield that was its home has been restored and expanded into an aviation museum chronicling the early days of flight to space travel. An annex of Munich’s renowned Deutsches Museum located outside of the Bavarian capital, Flugwerft Schleissheim exhibits include a section of the Ariane 5, a workhorse rocket of the European space program. Another workhorse on view is a He 111 bomber of the type used by Germany’s Luftwaffe in World War II. Planes are parked inside a large glass-enclosed exhibition hall and historic hanger, with a combined exhibition area of 80,000 sq. ft.

From airport or central Munich station take subway S1 (Neufahrn/Ostbahnhof) to Oberschleissheim station, transfer to bus 292 (Garching-Hochbrück) get off at Flugwerft Schleissheim stop. One-way travel time 50 minutes.
