Chi Lin Buddhist Nunnery
Hong Kong, Hong Kong
This tranquil complex of buildings and courtyards is set apart from the madness surrounding it. Its low-lying structures cover 30,000 square meters of precious ground space while the neighbors are tightly packed into high-rise apartment buildings and traffic-snarled spaghetti junctions twist off in all directions. The timber nunnery was lovingly built in the style of the Tang Dynasty, without a single nail used in its construction. It’s the very antithesis of modern living; should you need to escape the frenetic pace of Hong Kong, step into the serenity of the nuns’ wooden pagodas for an hour’s respite. Free admission is an added bonus.
