Planten un Blomen
Hamburg’s wonderfully family-friendly green space offer lots of activities for kids including several playgrounds, pony rides, a roller rink — which becomes an ice rink come winter — and a daily schedule of workshops, puppet theatre, circus, and an annual children’s festival in summer — and best of all, they’re all free.
But the 47-hectare Plenten un Blomen (‘Plants and Flowers’) has lots for to entertain adults too: the botanical gardens, beds of rose, and Europe’s largest Japanese gardens, where a traditional tea ceremony takes place between 3pm–6pm each afternoon (May–Oct). There’s plenty afoot culturally as well: theater at the Grossen Wallanlagen (‘large ramparts’), free folk and classical concerts, and a water show daily at 2pm, 4pm, and 6pm in summer. Best of all, spectacular son et lumiere performances take place nightly in the water garden, when classical music is accompanied by dancing fountains and a magical light show (Aug 10pm, Sept 9pm).
