Det Kongelige Teater Operaen(Opera House)
Take a taxi boat from Nyhavn to Henning Larson’s masterly opera house across the Oresund. It opened in 2005 on a man-made island at Dokøen, just north of Christianshavn, and is reputed to have perfect acoustics. It is now the Danish turf of international opera stars and major-league productions of La Traviata and Der Rosenkavalier as well as experimental modern works, chamber and symphony concerts. Smaller-scale productions take place in the Takkelloft, attached to the main building. The Opera House was not an immediate success with the Danish public, but as the infrastructure has improved around it, the semi-circular glass building has become more popular. Its cantilevered roof and semi-circular frontage look spectacular when lit up at night. The guided tour, offered between 9:30am and 5pm, is the best way to see the spacious interior, connected by ramps, and the two stages. Please contact in advance to book a guided tour. Otherwise combine your visit with dinner in the restaurant, with views back across the harbor to the sparkling lights of Nyhavn.
