ARoS Arhus Kunstmuseum
Wed: 10 AM to 10 PM
A square, red brick 10-story gallery relatively recently opened, ARoS has immaculately white spaces inside and boasts the finest collection of Golden Age Danish (1700-1900) paintings outside Copenhagen, but it is the modern contemporary work that is the draw for most people here. CoBrA artist Asger Jorn and Andy Warhol, still enjoying his 15 minutes of fame, both have prominent places in the modern galleries. With over 1.5 million visitors each year, the museum has an incomparable collection of abstract works by Dane Per Kirkeby and Surrealist work by fellow countryman Michael Kvium. The West Gallery holds an ever-changing series of temporary exhibitions; works featured here includes the acclaimed video pieces Women without Men by Iranian Shirin Neshat. The ground-breaking 9 Spaces exhibition space sees installations added on an annual basis in rooms painted black to represent Dante’s nine circles of hell from The Divine Comedy; US artists James Turrell and Bill Viola currently have dramatic light-and-sound filled works here. There are shops and a café in the public spaces on the ground floor of the museum and the Art Restaurant at the top of the building has views across the city.
