Located at the foot of Federal Hill, AVAM is dedicated to artwork created by self-taught individuals without formal training. Once an industrial site, the museum was the inspiration of educator and philanthropist, Rebecca Alban Hoffberger, who raised millions from private donors to create this museum on industrial space that was donated by the city for this project.
Prisoners, mental patients, former addicts and even Holocaust survivors without formal art training have created works from simple and even discarded items such as toothpicks, bottlecaps and beads, in an expression of 'life's unique possibilities..to help us on our way.'
A unique attraction but not a traditional art museum, and probably not ideal for children.
